Popular player of the year nominees unveiled
Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) unveiled the nominees for the Pulsar popular player of the year award category on Sunday.
The winner in this coveted category will be decided through the fans’ voting. Voting for the players began from today and will be open until the midnight of July 1 as Pulsar Sports Award—an annual award programme organised by NSJF being held on July 2.
The nominees of the popular player of the year award were finalised by the selection committee headed by NSJF secretary Prakash Timalsina.
Apart from sms, fans can also vote for the nominees through the social network site facebook. According to NSJF General Secretary Mahesh Acharya, out of the total votes, 20 percent
will be counted from the facebook and 80 percent from sms voting.
For facebook voting, fans have to log in to www.facebook.com/sportsaward and click on the picture of their favourite player.
The five players who left their mark to qualify for the nomination of the popular POY are Paras Khadka (cricket), Jagjeet Shrestha (football), Jharana Gurung (wushu), Sishir Gurung (swimming) and Keshari Chaudhary (athletics).
Khadka, the captain of the national cricket team was in the limelight through out the year. Under his captainship, Nepal lifted the ICC World Cricket League Division 4 and ACC Trophy last year. Likewise, Nepal finished as runners-up in the ACC T20 Cup at home.
The right handed middle-order batsman, who gets the crowd roaring every time he comes to the crease, bagged the man-of-the-series in Division 4 and ACC Twenty20. Khadka said he was proud to be nominated.
Likewise, footballer Shrestha, who is a regular member of the national team after making his debut in 2011, has been hailed for his creativity on the field. He had bagged the best mid-fielder award in the Martyrs’ Memorial League after scoring four goals and assisting on three occassions.
Jharana is the player who ended the wushu’s medal drought after 18 years for Nepal. Jharana won bronze medal in women’s 56 kg in sansou at the Eight Asian Wushu Championship in Vietnam. She was also awarded the player of the year by Kaski district. Jharna urged her fans to start voting for her.
Similarly, Chaudhary came in the news breaking one record after another. The golden girl of athletics set four national records last year. Chaudhary, who had previously bagged the Pulsar youth player of the year award, has the national records in high jump, long jump, triple jump and 100m hurdles in her name.
Last but not the least, the swimming prodigy Sishir has made it to the list. Giving hopes in swimming, he broke the 28 year old record in 1500m freestyle last year. Sishir also set six national records and won a total of 32 gold medals in the past 12 months.
The player who gets the most number of votes and likes will walk away with the most coveted award and a Pulsar motorcycle.
To vote for your favourite and deserving contenders, you need to type pulsar player’s code and send it to 3131. Voting code for Khadka is PK, Shrestha is JS, Jharana is JG, Sishir is SG and Chaudhary is KC.
