EC, parties meet underway
KATHMANDU, JUN 19 - The Election Commission (EC) has initiated consultations with the political parties regarding the scheduled Constituent Assembly (CA) elections a day after the commission endorsed the CA Election Work Plan-2013.
A meeting among representatives of seven political parties and EC office bearers is being held at the commission office in the Capital.
UCPN (Maoist) General Secretary Posta Bahadur Bogati, Nepali Congress Vice Chairman Ram Chandra Poudel, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik leader Rameshwor Rai Yadav and Sanghiya Samajwadi Party Nepal Vice Chairman Rijwan Ansari, among other leaders, are present at the meeting.
The EC began discussions with the parties under the coordinator-ship of Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety as warm-up exercise. This is the first time the parties sat for talks with the parties after the government set November 19 as the date for CA elections.
The commission will be holding talks with the security bodies after the political parties. Heads of security bodies—Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force—have been arriving on the EC premises for talks.
It has been learnt that the EC will inform the parties about the ongoing preparations for the CA elections and hold discussions regarding future strategy.
