Banda in Rajbiraj to protest ex-king Gyanendra’s visit

-
Various student organisations enforced a banda in Rajbiraj, the district headquarters of Saptari, on Monday to protest the visit of deposed king Gyanendra Shah. The strike affected life in Rajbiraj and adjoining areas.

The former king arrived here in the afternoon amid protests. Student unions said their protest was againt a special treatment given to Shah as if he is the reigning king of the country. Welcome gates, banners and pamphlets seen in Rajbiraj addressed Shah as ‘His Majesty King’.

Police arrested about half-a-dozen students as they continued protest even after Shah’s arrival. A huge number of security personnel were deployed in and around Rajbiraj to avert any untoward incidents. SP Sanjaya Singh Basnet and Armed Police Force SP Bechan Yadav kept themselves busy to strengthen security in the area.

The enraged students affiliated with UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Madhes-based parties torched and demolished the welcome gates on Sunday evening.

With the protest, Shah’s scheduled visit to Shambhunath Temple at Shambhunath VDC has been put off.

The former monarch arrived here from Simara amid tight security along the East-West Highway. He went to a hotel instead of visiting the temple as the students took to the streets since early morning. Hundreds supporters welcomed Shah with bouquets of flowers as soon as he entered Rajbiraj.
