HLPC caught up in game of power sharing: Thapa

KAVRE, JUN 20 - Nepali Congress (NC) central member Gagan Thapa has remarked that the existance of High Level Political Committee (HLPC) formed to assist the government is meaningless. He added that the government should be allowed to work independently by dissolving the HLPC.

Addressing a programme organised here in Banepa to felicitate the students who passed SLC 2069 with outstanding marks, Thapa accused the HLPC of being too caught up in the game of power sharing.

“The HLPC has been restricted to the game of power sharing,” he said. “The government should be allowed to work in an independent manner by scrapping the committee.” He added the cross-party committee should trust the government formed through consensus among the parties.

Saying that there is no alternative to going for Constituent Assembly (CA) election slated for November 19, Thapa said the talks held with the poll-opposing parties were nothing more than formality.   “The government should hold honest dialogue with the disgruntled parties. The parties should also exhibit utmost flexibility during the talks,” said Thapa, “The government should move ahead for elections if the dissenting parties do not show interests to go for polls, despite all the efforts on its part.”

He said that the government should conduct the upcoming CA polls in a free and fair environment. He expressed his doubts about the UCPN (Maoist)’s attitude about the polls. “This time Congress will not surrender. If the UCPN (Maoist) try to disrupt the polls, the elections might be violent,” the leader Thapa.
