Bangladesh, India advance to semis
KATHMANDU, JUL 24 -
Bangladesh advanced to the last four of the U-16 SAFF Football Championships with a 3-1 win over Sri Lanka at Nepal Army ground on Tuesday.
Mohamed Dulul scored a brace for Bangladesh in a must win match. Sri Lanka bounced back in the dying moments of the first half as SS Nidesh scored the equaliser in the 43rd minute. Bangladesh turned the match on its head with two goals in the second half.
Bangladesh came out all guns blazing leaving Sri Lanka’s defence in tatters. Dulul netted home his second goal of the match in the 57th minute to tilt the match in Bangladesh’s favour. Turiqual Islam took the match away from Bangladesh’s grasp with a brilliantly struck goal in the 81st minute. The result meant both India and Bangladesh, each on three points, progressed through to the semi-finals with a game in hand, while Sri Lanka crashed out after failing to earn a single point.
On Thursday, India play Bangladesh in a match that will decided the winners of Group B. Likewise, Nepal take on Pakistan for a place in the semi-finals from Group A on Wednesday at the Dashrath stadium.
