Dahal hands in names despite deputies’ dissent

KATHMANDU, DEC 31 -
Despite objections from senior leaders Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha, the UCPN (Maoist) submitted on Monday the list of 54 candidates to the EC to nominate them as lawmakers in the new CA.

As the party plunged into a fresh dispute over awarding the PR seats, it failed to publicise the names submitted to the EC. Leaders said the list has an equal number of male and female candidates . The Central Committee on Sunday had entrusted the top leaders to finalise the names but Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Bhattarai and Shrestha differed in their choices.

The top three leaders who lead three rival factions competed to accommodate their own confidantes on the list of lawmakers. Bhattarai and Shrestha walked out of the meeting at party headquarters expressing dissatisfaction, but Dahal prepared the list and submitted it to the EC late in the evening.

Maoist spokesman Agni Sapkota confirmed that Bhattarai and Shrestha walked out of the meeting.

“As the selection was done as per the criteria passed by the Central Committee, there is no reason to express dissatisfaction,” said Sapkota, adding that Bhattarai and Shrestha had pressed Dahal to induct leaders close to them.

A leader close to Bhattarai said the PR list submitted to the EC is “unbalanced” and “biased” as Dahal awarded most of the seats to his supporters.

Dahal has defended his decision saying that the list was submitted to meet the EC deadline. “There are some errors. We will correct those within a couple of days,” said Maoist leader Barsha Man Pun.
