CIAA fiat on medical waste mgmt

KATHMANDU, DEC 12 -
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has directed the Ministry of Urban Development to form a high-level team to monitor and implement the acts and laws on medical waste management.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CIAA said it will write to the chief secretary of the ministry, asking him to act as a facilitator between different agencies concerned for effective and proper management of medical wastes.

The move comes in response to the complaints received by the anti-graft commission on the harms posed by medical wastes on environment and public health.

The Solid Waste Management Act (2011) states that institutions generating hazardous medical and chemical wastes should also process and manage them following stanadard procedure. In case of non-compliance, the Act dictates, the institution or person in charge could face a fine between Rs 50,000 and Rs 100,000 and/or jail sentence up to three months.

The Ministry of Health and Population estimates 13,613.5 tonnes of medical wastes are generated annually across the country; 75 to 90 percent are non-hazardous.
