Convict uses drain, flies the coop

KATHMANDU, DEC 12 -
A man convicted in a drug smuggling case fled the Sundhara-based Central Jail on Wednesday morning. Suraj Singh, 23, of Rouha-5 in Sarlahi made his way out through a sewage drain, police said. Singh crawled through the narrow waste outlet and came out at the opening near the Office of Livestock Development, around 250 metres away from the prison.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) at the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, Subodh Ghimire, said the small-statured Singh probably removed the flush cover of the sewage and fled through it.

“Once outside, people mistook him for a lunatic and chased him away, as he was naked,” Ghimire said.

Asked if Singh escaped due to lax security at the prison, Ghimire said they never thought someone would get into such a filthy place to flee.

He added that a search for Singh is under way, while they are looking into all such possible ‘escape-holes’ on the prison premises. According to him, police have sent the picture of the man to all the entry points of Kathmandu Valley.

In August 2007, an inmate tried to take the drainage route out, but got stuck in the middle, only to be rescued by the police later.

Police said Singh was arrested in June this year with 500 strips each of Diazepam and Brufen tablets.
