Taiwan to construct Bouddhanath stupa replica

KATHMANDU , DEC 11 -
Taiwan is planning to build a replica of Kathmandu’s Bouddhanath Stupa in Tainan city, and the construction will begin soon, according to the Bouddhanath Development Committee.

At a programme here on Tuesday, David Chang, the chairman of the replica construction committee, said the replica would help strengthen the cultural and religious relationship between Nepal and Taiwan .

“Buddhism is not only a symbol of peace, but it will also help promote tourism,” Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ram Kumar Shrestha, told the programme.

Bouddhanath Development Committee Chairman Sampurna Kumar Lama said the proposed $10 billion ‘Sister Stupa’ will be a perfect replica not just in size and shape, but also the entire surroundings, which will be exactly the same. “Shops, cafes, hotels and houses will also be replicated, while they will all have signboards that will read, ‘the original is in Nepal,’” he said.
