Respect mandate: Chinese expert

HONG KONG, DEC 12 -
A leading Chinese expert on Nepal and South Asia has said all the political parties should respect the people’s mandate . He also underscored the need to form a consensus government.

Hu Shisheng, director of Institute of South and Southeast Asian and Oceania Studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), told the Post on Wednesday that UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has no alternative to respect the election results.

He, however, said that the state needs to assure the Maoist party about the issue of vote rigging that the latter has been raising.

Hu also said the CA poll results were not very unexpected to him. He said he did not have any belief that some external forces altered the election results.

According to him, one of the reasons why the Maoist party was defeat in the election is that it failed to work as per the expectation of the people who made it victorious in the 2008 CA polls.

He said the Maoist policy of the singular identity based federalism was not the major reason for its defeat.

Hu clarified that China has never suggested any model of federalism, but will accept the decision of Nepali people.

The Nepal expert said expressed his belief that the new constitution would be promulgated this time. But he opined that the UCPN (M) should not be sidelined while writing the constitution.

Stating that Nepal and China has been sharing very good relations with Nepal, Hu said the northern neighbour does not give importance to any specific party.
