Nefin protests view against ethnic state
KATHMNDU, DEC 16 -
Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (Nefin) on Monday submitted a protest letter to the Adibasi Janajati Utthan Rastriya Pratisthan (AJURP) over its member secretary’s statement that his organisation has no problems accepting multiple identity-based federalism.
A delegation led by Nefin Chairman Nagendra Kumal met AJURP officials, urging them to take action against PB Gole for speaking against the official stance of the Pratisthan.
Nefin leaders say the arbitrary statement of Gole has questioned its official commitment to supporting single identity-based federalism.
AJURP is a public body headed by the prime minister established for the welfare of 56 Janajati organisations for the upliftment of the indigenous communities. The Pratisthan works in close coordination with Nefin, the umbrella organisation of Janajati communities in the country.
During a press meet in Makawanpur last week, Gole had said the Pratisthan should now stand in favour of multiple identity-based federalism as per the popular mandate.
After receiving the protest letter from the agitating leaders, Pratisthan officials including Gole admitted that he had made the mistake of going against the decisions of the organisation.
“There has been a decision to issue a statement to correct the mistake by reiterating the stance on single identity-based federalism,” said Ang Kaji Sherpa, former Nefin general secretary.
Sherpa accused Gole and some other senior Pratisthan officials, including AJURP Vice-chairman Jhok Bahadur Thapa Magar, of voicing the official view of the parties that appointed them.
The Pratisthan has also formed a seven-member committee to draft a concept paper on single identity-based federalism. Sources at the Pratisthan said Gole is politically affiliated with the CPN-UML.
