Koirala urges Khanal not to raise issue of prez appointment
KATHMANDU, DEC 05 - Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has urged the CPN-UML leadership not to raise the issue of presidential appointment.
The meeting between the top leaders of major two parties in the new Constituent Assembly came at a time when the UML has been stressing on the need to elect a new president and vice president as per fresh mandate.
Koirala went to Khanal's residence in Dallu on Thursday morning and suggested him to move forward according to the provision in the interim constitution regarding the appointment of president. He added the parties should strive to promulgate the new constitution at the earliest before taking up the issue of appointment of new president.
Emerging from the meeting, Koirala said the president and the vice president will be automatically ousted once the new constitution is promulgated. He opined that it would not be wise to raise the appointment issue in the present context.
According to Khanal's personal aide Ram Babu Adhikary, the duo held discussions on a range of issues including constitution drafting, government formation and power sharing.
Talking to media persons, Khanal said he is in favor of making appointments as per fresh mandate of the CA. He said the final decision on the issue will be made after consultations within the party.
During the meeting, Khanal stressed on the need to move ahead through consensus as the NC and the UML have been given a major responsibility through the mandate.
On the other hand, Koirala said the party has been making efforts to incorporate all the parties through discussion and forge understanding.
