‘We are confident of winning SAFF Championship’
KATHMANDU, AUG 26 -
Captain of the national team Sagar Thapa jovially said that Nepal are keen to keep the SAFF Championship title home this time around upon the team’s arrival following their successful preparation tour on Sunday.
Nepal embarked on a 21-day preparation campaign for the upcoming SAFF, scheduled to kick-off at Dasharath Stadium from August 31, in Bahrain and Kuwait where they played five friendly matches—winning four and losing one—against the U-25 sides of the host countries.
“We are ready entreat the country with the SAFF title this time as we are high on confidence as never,” said Thapa after landing at the Tribhuwan International Airport. “This tour has been fairly successful as it helped us to grow more accomplished and polished in each aspect.”
Thapa further said that the most fruitful part of the campaign was change in the playing style and plan. “Now we are comfortable playing in 4-4-1 formation. Strikers are in perfect shape as they have been scoring goals throughout the tour. We have worked hard to come over our weaknesses and I am more than happy to announce that we are heading into the tournament as the favourites.”
Coach Jack Stefanowski said that the team is fully prepared and confident for the SAFF. “We had a fantastic preparation campaign. We have worked and planned painstakingly to lift our maiden title at home. We are capable of defeating any team in the championships.”
The event is being held after 16 years in Nepal. The best result Nepal has so far achieved in the event was during the 1999 and 2011 when they had made it to the semi-finals.
