UCPN (M) ‘at low ebb’ since last CA polls

KATHMANDU, AUG 26 -
UCPN (Maoist) leaders who have been deployed at 240 electoral constituencies have reported that party’s ground position has weakened as compared to the 2008 Constituent Assembly ( CA ) elections and that it will have to work hard to secure majority seats in the November 19 election.

In an informal meeting of the party on Sunday, bureau in charge reported that the party has made a significant improvement in the Madhes belt, while the split is evident in the hilly region. With a high number of aspirants in the upcoming elections, according to them, the selection of candidates remains a pressing issue for the party leadership. They also suggested the party’s organisational structure needs to be made effective and intra-party disputes should be settled.

A month ago, the party’s extended plenum had deployed its leaders at the grass-roots level to assess the party’s position. The party is also preparing to call a Central Committee meeting to discuss the ground reports prepared by them.

The leaders also reported that cadres and people are not happy with the party’s performance after the 2008 elections. “There are reports that suggest people are not satisfied with our works and performance. We have to correct the past mistakes. However, people still consider

the Maoist as the only party that can play a crucial role in drafting a constitution that guarantees federalism,” said party spokesperson Agni Sapkota after the meeting.

The party cadres have also suggested forging a cordial relationship with their counterparts in the CPN-Maoist that is threatening to disrupt the election process. The UCPN (Maoist) is planning to launch a nationwide campaign soon after its Central Committee meet this week.

Top leaders of the party plan to visit those areas where party’s position is weak. The party is also discussing the electoral constituencies of the top leaders. Sources said the top leaders are planning to change their previous electoral constituencies.
