Mumbai gang-rape case: All five accused arrested
MUMBAI, AUG 25 - All five accused in the brutal gang-rape of a young photojournalist in the city have been arrested, three days after the incident triggered outrage across the country.
While the fourth accused Kasim Bangali was nabbed from Mumbai late on Saturday night, the fifth accused in the case Salim Ansari was arrested from Delhi on Sunday.
Ansari, the fifth and last accused was arrested by the Mumbai crime branch from the national capital and is being brought to the metropolis, a senior police official told PTI.
Delhi Police was not told about the arrest before hand, sources in Delhi Police said.
Before that, police had on Saturday arrested two of the accused — Vijay Jadhav and Siraj Rehman — while another accused Chand Babu Sattar Shaikh alias Mohammed Abdul had been arrested on Friday.
Vijay Jadhav and Chand Babu Sattar Shaikh were produced before the court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till August 30.
The 23-year-old victim, an intern with an English magazine, was allegedly raped by the five accused at the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Parel area of central Mumbai on Thursday evening when she had gone there with a male colleague on an assignment.
The accused tied the hands of the victim's colleague with belts and took her to a thicket where they took turns to rape her.
The incident, which was a chilling reminder of the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case of last year, has sparked nationwide outrage.
