‘Don’t you dare revive war-era cases’

KATHMANDU, AUG 22 -
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday warned that his party would opt for a ‘revolt’ if war-era cases were revived to defame his party’s image.

Speaking at a programme in the Capital, the UCPN (M) chief said all the conflict-era cases should be dealt through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the transitional justice mechanism envisaged by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Interim Constitution.

“Reviving such cases is a serious ploy to tarnish our party’s image at the time of the election,” Dahal said.  “The regular court proceedings cannot address the war-era cases. All the parties and the government should understand this fact.” A few cases have been intentionally revived to bar “some popular leaders” to contest the election, the former prime minister said.

At the same programme, UCPN (M) leader Baburam Bhattarai said his party would not remain a mute spectator if such cases are revived.

Both Dahal and Bhattarai said the Young Communist League should play an effective role in the election.
