‘Parwatidevi’s family still unsafe’



PARSA, AUG 25 -
Family members of Parwatidevi Chaudhary, who was beaten to death 10 days ago on the charge of practising witchcraft, still feel insecure to live in the village, said National Women Commission (NWC) officials who visiting the family on Thursday.

Organising a press meet on Friday, NWC Chairperson Sheshachad Tara said the family members still fear attacks due to open Nepal-India border. She said the deceased’s daughter Sunkeshi, who is still in agony, is being discriminated against by villagers by calling her ‘witch’s daughter’.

She said the bereaved family members are finding it hard to sustain and perform funeral rites of the deceased as they are yet to receive any relief. She accused the District Women Development Office of not being concerned towards the incident and not visiting the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, a team of officials, including Chief District Officer Kailash Kumar Bajimaya, visited the deceased’s family on Saturday and took stock of the situation.

CDO Bajimaya handed over Rs 25,000 as relief to the family. He said local security units have been alerted to provide security to the victim’s family. He said a conducive environment will be created for the family after holding a

gathering among villagers soon after local youths, who fled after the incident, return.

He said a process has been initiated to provide relief from the District Development Committee to the family.
