UCPN (M) seeks poll fraud probe

  • NC, UML top guns seperately meet UCPN (M)

KATHMANDU, DEC 08 - The UCPN (Maoist) said that its demands including investigation into the alleged electoral fraud should be addressed for the party to join the Constituent Assembly (CA).

The UCPN (Maoist) put forth its position during separate meetings with the leaders of two largest parties in the CA—Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML— held at the party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal's Residence in the Capital on Sunday.

The UCPN (Maoist), along with 16 other disgruntled parties, has been claiming that there was massive rigging in the November 19 CA polls and demanding formation of an independent commission to look into the same.

CPN-UML leader Bam Dev Gautam informed that his party urged the UCPN (Maoist) to find an amicable political solution by joining the CA.

CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, KP Sharma Oli and Bam Dev Gautam went to Lazimpat-based residence of Dahal earlier this morning for talks.

During the meeting, the UCPN (Maoist) leaders demanded an independent high-level investigation commission to look into the election results.

CPN-UML Vice-Chairman Gautam said another meeting will be held after the demand of UCPN (Maoist) is met.

Earlier this morning, in a separate meeting with NC top leaders, the UCPN (Maoist) had demanded for the formation of an investigation panel to look into the vote-rigging.

UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Babu Ram Bhattarai, Narayan Kaji Shrestha among other leaders was present during the meeting.

Though the NC and UML has agreed to investigate electoral rigging in certain constituencies, they have been rubbishing the necessary to probe all the constituencies.

The UCPN (Maoist), which trailed in the third spot in the CA polls, has refused to take the seats it secured under the proportional representation (PR) category claiming that there was widespread rigging in the polls.

The NC and UML forged a three-point deal on Saturday agreement to work together for drafting the new constitution. The two largest parties have also agreed to hold talks with the disgruntled parties including the UCPN (Maoist).
