Pokhara country’s ‘cleanest city’

Pokhara added another feather in its cap as the lake city has been declared Nepal’s ‘cleanest town’. The city made it to the top for meeting waste management, greenery, drinking water and road criteria.

A programme was organised on Tuesday to confer the title of cleanest town on Pokhara. The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and the Solid Waste Management Technical Centre (SWMTC) awarded the Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City at a function on the eve of World Environment Day.

Chief guest of the event and Minister for Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Urban Development Chabi Raj Pant congratulated Pokhara for protecting the environment . “The municipality has made naturally-gifted Pokhara more beautiful. All other municipalities should follow in Pokhara’s footsteps to save the environment ,” said Pant.

Receiving the award, Executive Officer of Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City Jhalakram Adhikari said the city has more plans in its sleeve to preserve the environment . Recently, the city was declared plastic free zone and closed sewerage connection to the lakes. One of its plans include “One House, Two Trees”, said Adhikari.

Similarly, Executive Officer of SWMTC Sumitra Amatya said

local communities should make combined efforts in protecting the environment .

At the same programme, five school students received awards for winning an essay competition organised with the theme, ‘Environment for Younger Generations’.

This year’s World Environment Day is being celebrated under the slogan “Think, Eat, Save” on Wednesday by organising various programmes.
