VOIP operators arrested


KATHMANDU, JUL 19 -

Police on Wednesday arrested two individuals, including a Bangladeshi man, on the charge of operating Voice Over Internet Protocol ( VOIP ) in an apartment at Grandy Tower Apartment situated in Saraswati VDC-4, Kathmandu.

The arrestees are Javed Khan, 26, a Bangladeshi national and Lakpa Tamang, 24, a permanent resident of Dhankuta. According to police, while Khan was the mastermind of the illegal call bypass, Tamang had been assisting him for the past six months. Khan had rented the apartment for Rs 20,000 per month and had hired Tamang for a monthly salary worth Rs 25,000. While Tamang had been staying alone in the apartment in the topmost flat of the 12-storey Grandy Tower, Khan is a temporary resident of Swyambhu. Police said Khan rarely visited the apartment.

Among the devices confiscated from the apartment are a laptop, two GSM VOIP devices containing eight ports each, a router, 165 unused Ncell simcards, 15 used Ncell simcards, 52 Smart Sim, a battery, two 3G modem and two mobile phone sets, among others.

In the last three years, the CIB arrested 96 individuals on the charges of operating VOIP , said SP Ishwar Babu Karki, CIB spokesperson.
