'Relief only through govt channel'

KATHMANDU, JUL 26 - The government has decided to instruct all local authorities in 75 districts not to allow NGOs or individuals to distribute relief materials to flood and landslide victims.

According to the Minister for Information and Communication Madhav Poudel, the decision is taken to ensure effective implementation of the code of conduct for the proposed Constituent Assembly elections. If any NGOs or individuals want to distribute relief materials, they should do so only through the government mechanisms, he said. The decision is taken after some political leaders decried former king Gynendra Shah's programme to distribute relief materials to flood victims through the Himani Trust, an organisation run by his sister-in-law Himani Shah. The ban will be effective till November 19, the date set for elections.
