Post Caree Edufair 2013: Enthusiastic crowds swelling
KATHMANDU, JUL 28 - Binayak Pokhrel was in a dilemma about choosing the right college to study Environment Science, a subject that he thinks acts as a springboard to his future career. Now the Plus Two Science graduate is no longer in a dither about his higher study plan, thanks to The Kathmandu Post Career Edufair 2013.
Pokhrel was among over 56,000 visitors who attended the fair at Bhrikutimandap on Saturday. Like others, he got all information about the subject of his choice. “I wanted to know everything about the colleges running the Environment Science course, fee structure and scholarship,” he said. “The fair, to that effect, turned out to be a perfect place for me.” With more enthusiastic crowds on the second day, the event drew 81,500 visitors in just two days, according to the organisers.
Participated by more than 130 institutions under one roof, the fair has provided visitors with an opportunity to interact directly with representatives of several colleges, get the best counselling possible for furthering their academic careers and learn about the education system, courses of study, scholarships and the academic environment of the country they want to go to. Representatives from the US Embassy in Nepal have been providing students with the first-hand information on visa regulation and processing for the colleges in the US on the daily basis. Colleges from India, Bangladesh, China and Thailand as well as those renowned ones in the country have provided students with a number of choices, including comparison between educational programmes run by different colleges.
The event aims to serve as a bridge between various institutions and students who are eager for educational and professional opportunities in and out of the country. It has given more priority to career counselling over course counselling. Various universities are providing information to visitors about several disciplines such as Science, Humanities, Chartered Accountancy, Paramedics, Management, Information Technology and Fashion and Design.
Unlike other education fair s, this one is not just limited to colleges and universities as it boasts a wide range of stalls from consultancies, banks and financial organisations, career consultants and job providers. If any student wants to learn more about a particular course, the domestic colleges participating in the fair take visitors to their offices.
Apart from regular academic counseling, students on Saturday found motivational speeches and job related counseling like an added bonus. Famous pop singers Sugam Pokhrel and Indira Joshi rocked the event with their greatest hits, enthralling visitors for more than an hour.
Book exchange
KATHMANDU: Apart from career counseling services, a large number of students visiting the fair have been benefited from second hand book exchange facilities, a new initiative of The Kathmandu Post Career Edufair 2013. Visitors are bringing unwanted books to the fair and exchange with new ones.
“I brought my old books and exchanged with new books I needed,” said Samikshya Parajuli, a 12th grader from Kathmandu Barsha Higher Secondary School, on Saturday. Several book genres, including those belonging to academic courses, can be exchanged in the fair. (PR)
