India beat B’desh to top group
KATHMANDU, JUL 26 -
India topped Group B registering a comfortable 2-0 win over Bangladesh at Nepal Army ground on Thursday to advance to the semi-finals of the U-16 SAFF Football Championship.
Both teams had already secured their birth in the last four and were competing for pole position in the group.
In the first half which produced few goal scoring opportunities, forward Bedashwor Singh broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute with an impressive free-kick to put India in the driving seat.
Rejuvenated from their late goal in the first half, India started the second period on the front foot. India posed constant threats to the Bangladesh defence from their attacking buid-up play.
In the 63rd minute, skipper Krishna Pandit came close to doubling India’s lead after he missed a one-on-one opportunity at Bangaladeshi keeper Pappu Hossain.
Hossain produced a flurry of saves in the second session to put Bangladesh within the catching distance from India.
India’s Prosenit Chakroborty almost scored from the centre of the pitch only to see his long-range effort go just over the bar.
Bodo Baoringdao also missed a close scoring opportunity in the 87th minute. But an unmarked Pandit conformed victory for India scoring the second deep into injury time. With the win, India topped the group with six points from two wins, while Bangladesh joined them in the the last four as group runners-up after defeating Sri Lanka in their first match.
India will take on Afghanistan for a place in the final whereas Bangladesh take on hosts Nepal in the other semi-final match.
