Govt to renovate quake-hit schools
KATHMANDU, JUL 26 - The government has planned to renovate school buidings which were damaged due to an earthquake in eastern hilly region two years ago.
Under the three-year plan to complete the work, the Ministry of Education has selected 846 classrooms in current fiscal year. Around 2,150 classrooms mainly in Taplejung and Illam districts were damaged in the earthquake measuring 6.8 on the rector scale on September 11, 2011. A record at the Department of Education (DoE) shows that 1,656 classrooms need to be renovated in the districts.
Authorities said some schools are still conducting classes in temporary learning centres. “We are preparing to complete the maintenance and renovation work within the next fiscal year,” said Jhappar Singh Bishwokarma, chief of the Department of Infrastructure at the DoE.
The government has allocated Rs 100,000 to Rs 150,000 for the renovation of each school. Around Rs 90 million will be required for the project in fiscal year 2013/14. Similarly, the government is planning to add 5,812 new classrooms in public schools focusing districts hit by natural disasters. According to Bishworkarma, around Rs 3 billion will be required for the work.
