Nepal-India agree to resolve problems via dialogue

KATHMANDU, JUL 09 - High-ranking government officials of Nepal and India have agreed to resolve all existing problems between the two countries through the medium of discussion and dialogue .

The agreement to resolve problems in the field of trade, commerce and inundation was reached during the high-level talks held in the Capital on Tuesday under the leadership of the foreign ministers of the two countries.

Stating that views were exchanged on matters of mutual interest and concern in the talks, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arjun Bahadur Thapa said the peace and democratic process as well as the upcoming Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal were also discussed during the meeting.

"We discussed a large number of issues concerning trade facilitation, laboratory testing, water resources, extradition treaty, and additional customs duty", he said.

An agreement has also been reached to form a joint committee led by the Commerce Secretaries of the two countries which will work to put an end to the additional customs duty levied by India in Nepali products and also remove all other obstacles to export promotion, Thapa said.

Declining to comment on the proposal of consolidating the Tribhuvan International Airport with Indian support, as it was under consideration at the Court, spokesperson Thapa said both Nepal and India wish to establish Immigration Offices in the border areas, as per the agreement reached in the recently held Nepal-India Home Secretary-level meeting.

He also shared that general discussion on the construction of Nepal Police Training Academy in Panauti of Kavre was held but no official decision was taken on it as legal procedures were yet to be fulfilled for the same.

Foreign Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire and visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid led their respective delegations during the talks held today.

Foreign Minister Ghimire also hosted a luncheon in honour of his Indian counterpart, who arrived here this morning on a day-long visit. RSS
