Nepali worker gets death sentence in UAE

A lower court in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sentenced a Nepali migrant worker to death for his involvement in the murder of a Pakistani national.

The migrant worker , Anish Khaling Rai, 23, of Matshyapokhari in Sankhusabha district, was handed down the death sentence on Saturday. He was arrested and jailed since October 25 after a Pakistani national with whom he had a fight in a restaurant died later. He had gone to UAE to work as a domestic help two years back.

Five Nepali migrant worker s have been charged with murder cases in UAE.

Nepali ambassador to UAE, Dhananjaya Jha, said they learnt about the death sentence after a letter was sent by the Foreign Ministry in Kathmandu. The Nepali embassy has send representatives to the prison where Rai has been kept to enquire about the incident.

He said the victim can appeal the case to the appellate court and Supreme Court as the death sentence was given by the lower court.

According to deputy head of the Nepali mission, Deepak Adhikari, there is a provision to hold discussions with the concerned family regarding the death sentence related cases.

Meanwhile, the family of Rai has urged the Nepali authorities to save Rai. Rai's wife Rabita has been knocking on doors of authorities seeking support to save the life of her husband.
