Nepal Army dons new duty-hour uniform

KATHMANDU, JUL 17 -
The Nepal Army (NA) has changed its uniform for soldiers on duty during office hours, effective Tuesday.

In doing so, the Army aims to make the dress ‘more comfortable and as per international standards.’

While Army personnel stationed at the Headquarters have started wearing the new uniform—white shirts and green trousers, the old footwear will remain. The uniform is, however, mandatory only on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Army officers said their personnel going abroad to take part in seminars face problems wearing the combat dress. “In many cases, army personnel wearing the combat dress were barred from attending the seminars,” an NA officer said.

According to the NA, armies in neighbouring countries also have a separate uniform to be worn during office hours.

The new uniform is also mandatory for NA personnel attending programmes or functions during visits of foreign guests and dignitaries.

“There was such a uniform in the Army in the past too. We only revived the system. It should not be taken as a total dress change for the Nepal Army ,” Army spokesperson Suresh Sharma said.

According to the NA, 4,000 personnel in Kathmandu will get the new uniform in the first phase this year, while the new rule will be gradually enforced outside the Valley.
