Badi women 'back to prostitution'
BARDIYA, JUL 04 - Badi people in the district said women in their community are compelled to return to their “old and humiliating profession” as the government failed to provide them basic services like health, education and employment.
Nearly 40 Badi women have adopted prostitution to eke out a living in Bardiya district alone.
Arjun Badi , central member of the Badi Community Upliftment Committee, said Badi women were forced to be involved in prostitution as the government failed to implement the agreement reached with the community on December 1, 2007.
"We want to live a decent life. But we are forced to be involved in prostitution due to the government's apathy," said a Badi woman of Rajapur-6.
She said they do not have any alternatives to earn a living. There are 219 Badi households in Bardiya district.
