CPN-Maoist sets bottomline for poll talks

KATHMANDU, JUL 08 -
The CPN-Maoist has said scrapping the 25-point presidential decree issued on March 14 that paved the way for the formation of the present government is the party’s minimum condition for talks.

A Politburo meeting of the party set this rider on Sunday a day after the High-level Political Committee (HLPC) decided to adopt maximum flexibility to bring all poll-opposing parties on board the election process.

The HLPC’s readiness to hold a round-table conference is a positive sign, the meeting said, but reiterated that it would stick to its scheduled plan of disturbing and boycotting the elections.

“The four parties are not ready to annul the 25-point presidential decree so there is no meaning of the flexibility they show,” said CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya, referring to the HLPC’s decision not to reschedule the poll date and dissolve the government. CPN-Maoist leaders maintain that their party would not take part in the elections under the incumbent government. “We are ready to go for the polls if a political government is formed,” said a leader close to Baidya. The Politburo meeting, however, has left the door open for talks.
