Teacher’s wrath falls on boy for not doing his homework
NEPALGUNJ, JUL 04 -
A student in Nepalgunj has got the short end of the stick for not doing his homework. A teacher of Bheri Zone English Medium School “beat up him till his left eye got damaged”.
Ajaya Dhobi, a nursery student in the school, said his teacher , Aradhana Rana, hit him with a textbook in his eye 10 days ago. “Miss (Aradhana) also thrashed my friends,” said the eight-year-old. Soon after the incident, he was taken to the Phattebala Eye Hospital in Nepalgunj.
However, the hospital discharged Ajaya, saying that his damaged eye needs to be transplanted at the Tilganga eye hospital in Kathmandu.
“I had gone to Nepalgunj to sell vegetables after he went to school that day. Later, I received a phone call from the hospital and came to know that my son’s eye was damaged,” Ajaya’s father Maikulal said. “The school authorities have assured help in his treatment,” he said. Maikulal said the owners of the school offered him about Rs 60,000 to settle the case. He said they approached him as he lodged a complaint with the police. However, the owners of the school could not be reached for comment.
Ajaya will be taken to the Capital-based Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology for further treatment on Thursday. Various rights organisations have collected money for his treatment. Mohanlal Mishra, a member of the school management committee, admitted that the teacher had made a mistake and said the school will bear all the treatment costs.
Maikulal lodged the complaint with the police on Wednesday, demanding action against the guilty, compensation and treatment costs. Police said a full inquiry into the matter has been launched.
In Banke, many incidents of students being subject to corporal punishment at the hands of teacher s have been reported lately. Madhusudan Dawadi, regional chief of CWIN Nepal, said more than a dozen complaints were lodged against schools with his office in the past three months alone.
