NA comes to rescue when supply lines fail
MAHENDRANAGAR, JUL 08 -
The motorway leading to the flood-affected Darchula district remains obstructed due to landslips, triggering a food shortage. Efforts to deliver food materials by helicopter have been hindered due to the inclement weather.
Authorities have mobilised Nepal Army personnel to carry provisions to Khalanga, the district headquarters. The NA soldiers from the Shatrubhanjan Company delivered 14 quintals rice to Khalanga from Dattu on Sunday.
The rice will be distributed from the local depot of the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC), said Maj Bimalraj Sharma. He said the Army will continue to carry the food materials to Khalanga until the weather has cleared for helicopter delivery.
Food distribution will be on priority basis, flood victims receiving it first. The Nepalgunj-based mid-western regional office of the NFC had delivered 190 quintals rice for Darchula district that arrived in Dattu on Friday. Earlier, the NFC regional office had released 143 quintals for the Darchula flood victims. The consignment was stuck in Dadeldhura for a few days due to roadblocks. An NA helicopter was used to transport the rice to Khalanga.
Surendra Bista, the regional office chief of the NFC, said food materials from the emergency reserve were also put to use to address the food crisis in Darchula.
Flood-hit children without clothes
TALLODHUNGESHWOR (DAILEKH): The Badi families from Tallodhungeshwor village in Dailekh district, who were displaced by Karnali river floods three weeks ago, have requested the authorities to provide clothes for their children. More than 100 flood-hit Badi children under five are without clothes, making them vulnerable to various diseases.
Flood victim and a parent, Man Bahadur Badi said children’s clothes were not among the relief materials they received from various donors and agencies in the wake of the flooding. He said most children had nothing to wear.
More than 28 Badi families displaced in the June 17 flood are living on a local school compound awaiting resettlement.
