Govt panel to fix ceiling on higher school fees

KATHMANDU, JUL 07 -

The government has formed a five-member committee to set a ceiling on the fees charged by higher secondary schools.

After private higher secondary schools came under fire for collecting ‘exorbitant’ fees, a meeting of the Central Level Fee Determining and Monitoring Committee on Friday formed the panel led by Tek Narayan Pandey, director at the Department of Education.

According Suprabhat Bhandari, chairman of the Nepal Guardian Association and a member of the monitoring committee, the panel will fix a ceiling on fees collected by Plus Two, which will come into effect from next year after an endorsement from the Ministry of Education.

The committee has also directed all higher secondary schools not to hike fees this year. “The fees in this academic session would not exceed the last year’s limit,” he said. “However, it can be adjusted if salaries of the teachers get increased.”

The new fee structure will be fixed based on the current fees in Grade 10. Bhandari said the fees for Plus Two will be slightly higher than the school level scale. On average the fees for Grade 11 is around two times higher than Grade 10.

The committee also has formed different teams to study advertisement campaigns of higher secondary schools.
