Landslips pose threat to Gulmi village
GULMI, JUL 11 -
Around 200 houses at Rupakot VDC-6, 7 and 8 in the district are at high risk of landslides which have not been controlled for the past 13 years.
More than 80 households in the area have been displaced by the landslip so far while children are facing problems after a track leading to three local schools has been swept away.
Local people accused the District Soil Conservation Office (DSCO), Water Induced Disaster Control Office, District Development Committee and the concerned VDC of being apathetic towards their problem.
“The landslip caused a great loss this year. What we got so far is only assurance,” said Lal Bahadur Thapa, secretary of the local Landslide Control Committee.
He said the landslip is still on though the DSCO and Rupakot VDC provided Rs 110,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively for a project to control it.
“There are cracks on the foundation of my house. We cannot sleep properly due to fear of being washed away any time,” said local resident Chura Bahadur Nepali.
“We are really in trouble as we can neither live here safely nor move to a new place,” said Junge Pariyar, another villager.
Thapa said the settlement should be shifted to a safer place at the earliest. Officials of the DSCO said a long-term policy is required to control the landslip.
