NC yet to reach deal on internal power sharing
KATHMANDU, JAN 17 -
Top leaders of the Nepali Congress—President Sushil Koirala, senior leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel— failed to reach a consensus over the internal power-sharing issue on Thursday, creating confusion over the selection of the party’s prime ministerial candidate.
A meeting among the three leaders on Thursday at party president’s residence in Maharajgunj failed to reach an agreement as all three sides laid their claims over parliamentary leadership.
A close confident of Deuba told the Post that there is no alternatives other than facing an election for selecting the parliamentary leader. “Deuba has indicated that the row may lead to polls and he has called a meeting of his supporters to discuss the matter on Friday at his residence,” the Deuba loyalist said.
Gopal Man Shrestha, another leader close to Deuba, meanwhile, said they have not yet decided to go for an election hoping that discussions among Koirala and Deuba will settle the issue.
However, Koirala, who is facing pressure from Deuba and Poudel, is yet to come up with a convincing internal power-sharing proposal even after several of his loyalists advised him to patch up ties with Deuba. In order to woo both Deuba and Poudel, Koirala is said to have prepared a strategy that he will step down from the prime ministerial position after promulgating new constitution, will give big pie to Deuba camp in the Cabinet and will provide Deuba the responsibility of looking after the party activities and organisation in his absence without giving him the post of acting party president.
Meanwhile, the party has called a meeting of its Central Working Committee (CWC) for Saturday, which will form an election committee to conduct the poll of the party’s parliamentary leader. “The agenda of upcoming CWC meeting is set to form an election committee,” said Nabindra Raj Joshi, a CWC member.
During Thursday’s meeting, Koirala is said to have sought support from Poudel offering him a role to run the party, which latter dismissed immediately. “If I run the party, Deuba camp will prop up internal conflicts so I am not going to take up the responsibility,” Poudel is said to have told Koirala.
In his meeting with Koirala, Deuba is sasid to have clarified that he needs to consult his friends to decide on the matter.
Deuba, who is said to be seeking the responsibility of party acting president if Koirala wants to be a prime ministerial candidate, has called a meeting of his
loyalists at his residence to chart out future course and strategy.
